Ronny Chieng
Ronny Chieng,
born 21 November 1985 in Malaysia, is a comedian and actor. Chieng is currently
the senior correspondent of The Daily Show on Comedy Central. He also developed
and is the star of the sitcom Ronny Chieng International Student, which
premiered on ABC Australia (Australia) in 2017. Chieng was born to a Malaysian
Chinese couple in Johor Bahru (Malaysia). He was raised in Singapore and the
United States, living in Manchester, New Hampshire from 1989 until 1994. Chieng
performed with Trevor Noah in 2013 at the comedy festival in Melbourne,
Australia. A few years later, he was asked to take on the role of a
correspondent for The Daily Show, which Noah hosts. He was named one the top 10
comics to watch by Variety in July of 2016. In October 2016, Chieng appeared as
a guest on The Daily Show to respond to a Jesse Watts Fox News segment that
many considered racist. Chieng airs an expletive-filled critique of the
conservative network's segment. Chieng also visited New york City's Chinatown
in which Watters ridiculed the residents. The video went viral and was covered
by the Washington Post, Slate, and various other outlets. Chieng was a
Singapore Sea Scout in his early years. Chieng hasn't been able to gain
citizenship or permanent residence in Australia despite living in Australia for
10 years. Chieng joked in 2018 that he was cynophobic, but later stated that he
is 100 percent not afraid of dogs.
